Gold Inlays and Onlays
The term ‘Inlay’ and ‘Onlay’ describe the position of restorations relative to a tooth. Simply put, an ‘Inlay’ fills a space in a tooth but does not extend onto or over the chewing cusps. An Onlay is used to replace a cusp that has been broken or that is so weak that it is likely to break sometime in the future.
Why is Gold Used For Onlays and Inlays?
Gold has been used for decades in dentistry as a strong, durable and beautiful way of restoring teeth. The properties of gold and its alloys are near perfect for use in the mouth, and many gold crowns, onlays and inlays last for many decades.
In modern times, there are other options available, including the similarly strong and durable option of Dental Porcelain. Many people prefer the option of a tooth-coloured restoration and will choose porcelain over gold. However, in some situations, gold can still be the better option, especially when strength is needed but the space available to fit the crown is limited.
Of course, some of our patients are more than happy with gold regardless of what alternatives are available.
