Why Dentists Use Magnification

JulEye is National Eye Health Awareness Month. Ever wondered why your dentist wears those “unusual” glasses as they examine your mouth?

Wearing magnifying lenses doesn’t mean your dentist has poor eyesight. Even dentists who have “normal” vision can benefit from wearing oculars all sorts of magnification devices.

Why Dentists Use Magnification

Dentists often use magnification as well as illumination (light) devices to better see into a patient’s mouth. The typical “unusual” glasses you see your dentist is wearing are called “loupes”. Standard loupes magnify teeth by 2.5x. Magnification enables your dentist to examine your teeth in greater detail and diagnose some dental conditions that may otherwise be easy to miss.

Some of the advantages of using magnification during dental examinations/treatments are improved quality of treatment for the patients and improved ergonomics as well as improved posture for dentists.
