Not everyone enjoys coming in for their dental appointment, and some people find it downright terrifying to even think about having a dental procedure! This means that there are a lot of people in Canberra and surrounds who may not be receiving the dental care that they desperately need. We know that many local people put off visits to the dentist, even when they are aware of a problem brewing in their teeth. Some people put up with terrible pain, for weeks, months and longer because of how fearful they are about anything to do with dental treatment. It’s a terrible way to live, and that’s why we offer Sedation Dentistry.
What Is Sedation Dentistry?
Let’s first consider what sedation means.
A sedated state is when you are less aware of your surroundings and more relaxed about your circumstances. Levels of sedation can vary greatly, from very mild to very deep. Sedation can be achieved through various methods, including oral sedation (taking a sedative medication by mouth), inhalational (breathing a sedative gas) or intravenous (where sedatives are introduced directly into the bloodstream).
Sedation Dentistry is simply the provision of some form of sedation, usually inhalational or intravenous, during a dental appointment to enable a nervous patient to feel far more relaxed about receiving dental care.
Sedation Dentistry At Corinna Dental
We offer two forms of sedation at Corinna Dental.
Sometimes called Laughing Gas, this is a type of inhalational sedation, which means the patient inhales a mixture of the sedative gas and oxygen through a mask that is fitted over their nose.
In a dental practice, Happy Gas is used to achieve a relatively mild level of sedation. It provides a good sense of dissociation and relaxation during treatment appointments. It can be used by people of all ages and for any type of treatment.
The wonderful thing about this form of sedation is that the effects wear off quickly. This means that the individual remains sedated only for the duration of their appointment. Once they’ve finished their treatment, the sedative effects disappear and they can get on with their day.
Happy Gas is available at all of our locations (Woden, Brindabella Business Park near Canberra Airport, Deakin).

This type of sedation is also called “Sleep Dentistry”, “IV Sedation Dentistry” or “Twilight Dentistry”. It provides a much deeper form of sedation than Happy Gas. Patients generally tell us that they don’t remember much at all about their appointment, even though they are conscious and usually awake for the procedure. It’s common for patients to experience this amnesic effect.
Since this type of sedation is delivered directly into the patient’s bloodstream through a vein in the arm, and because the depth of sedation can be quite profound, a highly qualified team is needed to administer the sedation before dental treatment begins. The team will consist of either an anaesthetist or a dentist with training in the delivery of intravenous sedation, supported by dental assistants and nursing staff.
As with any sedation procedure, there are potential risks associated with intravenous sedation which your dentist will explain to you before you agree to treatment.
Because the after effects of intravenous sedation lingers for many hours after the appointment, the patient must always be accompanied home by a responsible adult.
Intravenous Sedation is only available in our Woden rooms.
