Today is World Diabetes Day—a fantastic time to discuss how having diabetes can affect your oral health, and vice versa.
Having a high blood glucose level can cause many problems: among them is a decrease in saliva, resulting in dry mouth. Having a dry mouth can then lead to tartar buildup which can cause gum disease.
When someone has a high blood sugar level, the blood vessels in their mouth become narrow, which can then reduce the blood supply to the gums, therefore increasing the risk of infection.
