Obesity and Oral Health
Studies have shown that being overweight is a risk factor in developing gum disease—regardless whether you smoke or suffer from diabetes (two risk factors that can contribute to developing periodontal disease).
While it is unknown how obesity contributes to having periodontal disease, an article published in Oral Health Journal advises dentists to be concerned about obesity in patients. The article reiterates that having a healthy body weight not only reduces the risk of developing chronic diseases like heart disease and high blood pressure but it could also lead to better oral health.
