Mouthguard Awareness Month 2015

Mouthguard Awareness Month 2015

It’s Mouthguard Awareness Month at Corinna Dental and time to remind everyone why wearing a mouthguard is so important. Not only is it vital for adults playing any kind of contact sport to wear a mouthguard, it is also extremely important for children to ensure they have the proper mouth protection when participating in sporting pursuits. We’ve written about the importance of this here .

According to the Australian Dental Association, some of the most common causes of dental injuries occur as a result of sporting accidents. Such damage, however, could be kept to minimum or completely avoided if a mouthguard was worn. Custom fitted mouthguards should always be worn when both training for and playing sport where there may be a risk of contact to the face.

So, why choose a custom made mouthguard? You can find out more information about the reasons for this here . Ultimately, however, an investment in a custom fitted mouthguard is worth it when you consider the often costly procedures involved once there is an injury to the teeth or jaw.

The Australian Dental Association outlines five excellent reasons for wearing a mouthguard:

  • 1. Cushions teeth against impact.
  • 2. Protects against jaw joint injuries.
  • 3. Protects against soft tissue injuries.
  • 4. Helps prevent neck and jaw injuries.
  • 5. May help reduce concussion.

You can visit the Australian Dental Association website for a great visual of these reasons .
