Healthy Canberra: What’s On In October 2016

It’s time for our monthly roundup of upcoming health-related events happening in and around Canberra this October. We hope you can take part in whichever way you can — by spreading the word through social media or even sending contributions!

Here are what’s happening next month:

1–31 October

Walktober – With the winter months behind us, it’s a great time to be outdoors and go for a walk! Did you know that October is Australia’s Walking Month? So go ahead and take the Walktober Challenge. Visit their website on how to participate.

Ocsober – Show our kids that there’s no need for alcohol to have a good time. Ocsober is an annual observance aimed to break the cycle of alcohol abuse to help Aussie kids life a safer, healthier life. Visit their website to learn how you can take part.

Foot Health Month – Because October is Walking Month, it makes sense that Foot Health Month is also held this time. Hosted by the Australasian Podiatry Council, it encourages us to look after, well, that part of our body that bears the extraordinary burden of our day to day living– our feet! 5 October – World Cerebral Palsy Day

There are over 300,000 Aussies who have Cerebral Palsy. Although it is the most common physical disability in childhood, it is widely misunderstood.

Celebrated every first Wednesday of October, Cerebral Palsy Day raises awareness of CP in communities and aims to assist others to look beyond the disability. Visit Cerebral Palsy Australia to learn how you can help.

7 October – National Hat Day

According to the2007 Australian Bureau of Statistics National Survey of Mental Health and Wellbeing, one in every five Australian aged 16-85 years had a lifetime mental disorder. Hat Day, an initiative of Australian Rotary Health, is a fundraising campaign wherein money raised will go to research helping the one in five Australians affected by depression, anxiety, schizophrenia and many other illnesses. 15 October – Global Handwashing Day

16 – 22 October – National Nutrition Week

As children prepare to go back to school, Nutrition Australia encourages families to join the “Try For 5 Challenge” — that is, to include 5 serves of veggies daily. Are you up for it? Visit their website to take part in this nutritious challenge.

22 – 30 October – National Children’s Week

Let’s celebrate children’s rights, talents and citizenship! This year’s theme is “Children have the right to reliable information from the media”.
