Gum Disease And Female Hormones
A recent review of women’s health issues shows the role of female hormones in having gum disease and how the latter can contribute to health issues like bone loss and preterm births.
Charlene Krejci, associate clinical professor at the Case Western Reserve University School of Dental Medicine reviewed 61 journal articles with 100 studies to discover whether female hormones have a relationship to gum disease and some women’s health issues like preterm labor and bone loss and she concluded that , “There’s definitely a gender-specific connection between women’s hormones, gum disease, and specific health issues impacting women”
Krejci added that although women tend to take better care of their oral health, women need to be more vigilant in maintaining healthy teeth and gums “to prevent or lessen the severity of some women-specific health issues”.
