Australian Dental Health Week 2016

It’s Dental Health Week 2016! This important national health observance is coordinated by the Australian Dental Association and runs in the first full week of August each year. This year it runs from today, Monday August 1 to Sunday August 7. The aim of the week is to educate Australians about the importance of maintaining good oral health in every aspect of their lives.

This year the focus is on Women and Oral Health.

You might wonder how dental health for women can be different enough from that of her male counterparts to warrant a full week of focus in this national education campaign. The fact is that there are particular times in a woman’s life where her dental health can be negatively affected simply by being female. These tend to be the times when hormonal fluctuations influence the environment in the mouth.

The “Big Four” areas of focus are:

  • Puberty
  • Menstruation
  • Pregnancy
  • Menopause

The good news is that the potential dental diseases that women are likely to experience during these times are entirely preventable!

The Australian Dental Association has put together plenty of information about these topics on its Dental Health Week website, which you’ll find here.

We’ll be digging deeper into each topic this week on the website. Stay tuned 🙂
